Everyone makes mistakes at least once or twice in their lifetimes. Personally, I’ve made a few, but the one mistake I learned the most from was the last day I spoke to my friend before he passed away.
I was only 15 years old at the time, but my long-time childhood friend was in the battle of his life against a brain tumor. I tried to help as much as I could. Since he lived in Greece and I lived in Florida, I made a point to Skype with him every day. He was like a brother to me, and I wanted to do all that I could to cheer him up and cheer him on in his battle.
Even though our bond was unbreakable, we would sometimes get into disagreements.
We had a serious fight one day, so we didn’t speak for a couple of days. It seemed like a little spat, and I knew in time we’d get over it, but little did I know that “friendly fight” would be the last time we would speak.
My friend lost his battle with cancer and passed away shortly after our disagreement. What I thought would just be a few days of silence ended up being forever.
My friend’s passing devastated me.
This heartbreaking moment taught me so much. I learned that life is short, and I should embrace life for what it is. I learned that you never know the day or time when someone you love will be gone forever, so it’s important to never hold grudges or let disagreements with those you love get the best of you.
Losing a friend is never an easy experience, but never resolving our disagreement will be a mistake that I constantly have to live with. It is something I will always have to work on forgiving myself for and learning to let go of. I’m thankful that I was able to take this horrific event and turn it into a learning experience, though. We all need to remember to forgive and forget. We should embrace life and stay present. After all, we never know when we will breathe our last breath or when the people we love the most will leave this Earth.
