A few days ago, I was surfing the web when I stumbled across some of my old blogs from when I was just 13 years old. Naturally, I was curious about what I was thinking back then, so re-read some of them. Some made me laugh, some made me cry, and some made me question why I taught that Toby Keith was good-looking, but most importantly, my old blogs reminded me of how far I’ve come in the process of loving myself.
At the time I had written those entries, I hadn’t fully learned to embrace my body or be myself. I had difficulty just looking at my own reflection, and I felt ashamed that I was into Blake Shelton and Toby Keith instead of rap music, which is what of the people in my social circle enjoyed. I constantly put down my personality, my style, and anything else that didn’t quite seem to “fit in” because I didn’t want to stand out.
I now know that should’ve been OK with those differences because they made me who I was as an individual. Not everyone is going to enjoy same things or look exactly alike, but being different is OK! Our differences give us stories to share with the world, and those powerful messages can change the way our society sees being “different.”
Now that I’m an adult, I’m no longer ashamed of who I am. I proudly blast country music, shamelessly profess my love for my favorite actors and baseball players, and am no longer afraid to stay home on a Friday night reading Jane Austen books while my friends are out on the town.
Overall, looking back at my old blog posts taught me that it may take a long time to find your true self, but you will get there eventually… and love it, too. All that matters is that you stay true to who you are. Everyone will love how authentic you are, and you might just find that you love yourself more, too.
