in my lifetime, I’ve had many experiences with young men flirting in ways that didn’t turn me on whatsoever. I try to be as nice about it to their faces, but in the back of mind, I’m saying to myself “I won’t be calling him back.” I thought it would be fun to take some of the pretty awkward compliments I have received from guys over the years, and create a list of the “Top 6 ‘Compliments’ From Guys That Secretly Aren’t That Great.”
“Your eyes are so beautiful!”
In my opinion, men overuse this compliment. and It’s too familiar, lacks creativity, and isn’t unique. I think more guys should try spicing it up by using more robust words, like marvelous, because it at least shows effort and that he’s potentially more educated.
“You’re just as beautiful as your mom!”
I don’t know how many times I have heard this complaint from guys that I’ve liked. Although it is nice to know I have my mom’s good looks and everything, it’s very odd when you are dating me to think my mother is attractive. #creeper
“You’re so damn chubby that it’s sexy!”
This is, in my opinion, the worst one on this whole list. For one thing, I genuinely find this to be offensive. Also, if you’re going to take a girl on a date, you don’t call her fat or chubby. That will turn a girl off entirely. Women’s bodies are a touchy subject and sometimes we struggle with self-love, so don’t shame our bodies with your words. Back in high school, when this guy was planning to take me out to dinner, he texts me saying, “I can’t wait to see your sexy, chubby little self.” Um, no…just no.
“You remind me of my sister! That’s why I like you so much!”
I can’t tell you how so unflattering I think this compliment is for a girl you’re trying to impress. Plus, that’s a good way to end up in the friend zone, my man.
“You remind of an ex-girlfriend that I’ve dated, but you’re much more attractive than her!”
This is a big no, no! You never compare a girl to an ex. It will lower her self-esteem big time, plus every time she sees your ex, it will remind her of what you said.
“You would be so much more beautiful if it wasn’t for your…”
It might be your hair, your eye color, or, in my case, my wheelchair. I understand that you guys are trying to win our hearts over, but you should never tell women that she’s beautiful and then add a conditional “but.” Come on, guys…really?
Well, that’s the 6 worst “compliments” I’ve ever received from men trying to win me over. I’m sure we all have our fair share of “flirtatious horror stories, and I’d love to hear yours!I I hope you guys enjoyed my perspective on these “delightful” not-so-complimentary compliments.
