Reflecting on the new year as someone with cerebral palsy, I am reminded of the incredible opportunity these new 365 days give us to grow. Just like a sunflower begins as a small seed, we too have the potential to grow into something beautiful and strong. With tender love and care, the sunflower develops stems and eventually blossoms into a stunning flower. Similarly, we must nurture our own growth despite the obstacles and challenges that come our way.
Living with cerebral palsy can feel like navigating through a forest of barriers, but it’s essential not to let these challenges hinder our growth. Each day presents a chance to learn, adapt, and grow. As I reflect on my journey, I am proud of the milestones I’ve achieved. This year, I published more books, got closer to my hip replacement, and prepared for tendons surgery. The highlight, however, was getting engaged to the love of my life and best friend, Cody and starting our podcast together Palsy Power
Additionally, I became a Christian officiant and lay minister. I volunteered with service members and veterans, and graduated with honors from a mental health volunteer program.
Looking ahead, I see my growth continuing as I delve deeper into Christian literature and focus on my personal development. Embracing the ride and appreciating the journey is what life is all about. Here are three things to keep in mind for growth in the new year, especially with cerebral palsy:
1. **Figure out who you want to be and who you already are.**
2. **Embrace the lessons that come your way.**
3. **Enjoy the adventure because you only get one shot at this.**
Just like sunflowers, our stems may be a little crooked, but that’s perfectly okay. We live our everyday lives, face days of disability grief or frustration, but we must not allow these to stop us from growing into the beautiful flowers we are meant to be. Our adventures continue, and with each new year, we plant new seeds and grow stronger.
