The Power of Listening: Changing Lives Through Stories
When it comes to connecting with others and paving the way to make a difference in the world, one of the most powerful tools at our disposal is our ability to listen. Sharing stories and giving people the representation they didn’t have particularly in literature is essential, but it is not the only way to bring about change.
In today’s fast-paced world, we often measure our success by the number of likes we have on social media, by the number of followers we have, or by the amount of money we make from our books. However, these metrics can be misleading, and they are not the true measure of the way we’re changing the world.
The way we make a difference is by the way we listen to other people’s stories without judgment. It’s about giving others the open space to share their experiences, respecting their perspectives on their journeys, and being a genuine reflection for them.
As a Cerebral Palsy advocate, I have learned this firsthand. By sharing my own story and being open about my challenges, I have been fortunate enough to connect with others who can relate to my experiences. Through those connections, I have been able to inspire and uplift individuals, showing them that they are not alone and that it is possible to overcome obstacles.
But beyond sharing my own story, I have learned that the impact I can make is even greater when I actively listen to others. By providing a non-judgmental space and truly hearing their stories, I can be a source of inspiration and support, helping them to find strength, courage, and resilience.
And now, as a certified mental healthcare counselor, I have had the opportunity to deepen my understanding of the power of listening. I have learned that the act of listening itself can have a profound impact on the well-being of others. It can heal wounds, provide solace, and offer a sense of belonging.
As a counselor, I am trained to listen attentively, make eye contact, and remain fully present. I strive to empathize with my clients, understanding their emotions and experiences without judgment. By actively listening, I provide a safe space for people to share their stories, knowing that by doing so, I can offer support and guidance on their journey to healing. My plan is to go to school and earn my associates in psychology as soon as I can. Having a behavior health specialist as a colleague gives us a sense of representation and more opportunities to find ways to improve people with disabilities mental health and gives them other choices, and other alternatives, besides having to be institutionalized
So, when it comes to making a difference in the world, let us remember that it is not about us, but about those we connect with. It is not about the number of likes we have or the number of followers we have, but about the way we listen to their stories. Let us be the mirrors that reflect their truth, offering them the love and support they need.
By practicing active listening, we can create a world where everyone’s story is valued, where people feel heard and understood, and where they can find the strength to achieve their goals. Let us embrace the power of stories, and let us be the change we wish to see in the world.
